Art Detection Services Ltd on Lost in the Wood !

Two long weeks ago , art detector and lover of Busta Rhymes, Matt Moore, came down to the studio to BRING DA HYPE regarding his uber successful 'Good Art Gallery' which is now open in the Created in Birmingham Shop. Those art detector tubes of his containing the magic fluid really do work !! The day after the show I brought in a crumpled knapkin with added doodles and, despite popular opinion, it was certified as definitely NOT art.
Look how happy he is with his stack of cookies YEAH :

Listen back to the whole show here (there wasnt actually a show on the 24th April as I was away last weekend, so if you click on that you may end up with The Feeling or something similarly shitawful)

THIS IS TODAY ------ ! THE IMPROBABLE MACHINE!

Those lovely fizzPOP folks will be in residence at The Lombard Method artist studios in Digbeth, Birmingham between the 1st and the 16th of May.

To kick things off with a blast of awesomeness today between 12 - 6pm , they are attempting to build an IMPROBABLE MACHINE in the style of William Heath Robinson. Or, if you like your cultural references slightly more contemporary, in the style of Fischli and Weiss’ Der Lauf der Dinge (The Way Things Go), the Honda Cog advert or that video from OK GO (which I'm not going put up because that band really piss me off as they get mounds of cash thrown at them to make vaguely interesting music videos, and subsequently they get all this attention for their "wacky" promos but, actually, they're just a bit shit). Basically, it'll be like an enormous game of mouse trap.

entry is free, but they really need you to bring some random stuff to help make the contraption truly great. Here are some suggestions, but we’re sure you can find some good stuff if you rootle around in the garage or poke around in some skips as you walk through Digbeth on your way in!
  • cardboard, lots and lots of cardboard!
  • tubes and drainpipes
  • umbrellas
  • strings
  • springs
  • magnets
  • buckets
  • wheels
  • marbles
  • golf balls
  • footballs
  • balloons
  • plastic sheeting or tapaulin
  • lego
  • any other toys or tracks
  • miscellaneous items and fancy goods
(personally, I would never part with my dear lego , but hey, sup to you !) see you there !

Stinky Wizzleteat on Lost in the Wood

(sorry in the delay in posting this , I've been galavanting around Lincolnshire)

Alllll the way back to last Saturday saw Birmingham-based sludgemathawesome trio Stinky Wizzleteat enter the Custard Factory for a little chit chat. Over the course of the show, John (the drummer) managed to run infront of a wedding photo shoot that was happening nearby, we discussed childhood cartoons of our yoof (including Sharky and George, The Angry Beavers and Captain Planet) and a ridiculous and wholly unncessary amount of love was expressed for pop-punk. You can still listen back to the whole show here. DO IT !

Playlist for the show :
A song by Small Brown Bike (Stinky Jim's choice - I am rubbish and can't remember the name of the song)
Short Circuit - Growing

Dub on Fire - King Tubby
Vague Recollection - Kid 606 and Dalek
Earth Died Screaming - Tom Waits

Soweto Kinch on Lost inthe Wood !

Last Saturday Birmingham bwoi, MOBO award-winning , sax maestro lovely chap Soweto Kinch (yes, thats right Soweto flipping Kinch) popped by the studio to tell all about his annual Flyover Show, which on Saturday 29th May underneath the Hockley flyover in Birmingham .

Now in its third year the unconventional inner city festival transforms the grey space beneath the Hockley Flyover into an oasis of cultural expression, celebrating generations of black British music and art. For the first time this show explores the specific theme of black female identity. The headline artists, include current Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle, Eska Mtungwazi and Bridgette Amafoh, all successful and highly original creatives, achieving widespread recognition without compromising their art or femininity.

There'll also be poetry, street art, dancing, and whole SMORGASBORD of badass Jamaican foodstuffs.

Also in the studio last Saturday was Bristol's Rosena Powell, who is a wonderful vocalist and lo-fi bass guitar strummy lady (more details sooon on her work). As Soweto is a professional MC who I've seen perform many a time at the massively entertaining LiveBox, I thought why not utilise his exquisite rhyme-spitting skills during this weeks big question , Who Is Soweto Kinch ? Rosie fearlessly took him on , despite no formal training in this area , and ingeniously did an extended metaphor rap, likening Soweto to a doberman pinscher. I think also this idea was subconciously ingrained into her grey matter whilst watching this short Chris Morris film the day before courtesy of Antonio Roberts.

Anyhoo, Soweto was a great sport despite all the shenanigans we threw at him, and you can listen back to the whole show here.

Playlist of muzak (not so much this week due to all the chitter chatter) :

TONIGHT :

The sludgey stoner behemoths will be making the walls wobble of the Asylum tonight, limited tickets will be available on the door. Support is from Totimoshi and Stinky Wizzleteat.

SPEAKING OF WHICH : the stinky boys will be in the studio THIS SATURDAY on Lost in the Wood fresh from opening for eyehategod! If I can get them to stop swearing quite as much (which is saying a fair bit, coming from me) they shall be discussing their upcoming 7" release, shit they dig and how they are "a major influence on the Beatles." MUCHO AWESOME.

If you can't make eyehategod (although, really, you should) Stinky Wizzleteat will be playing at the Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham on Saturday evening right after Lost in the wood! You really should go to that too.

Don't forget to tune in this Saturday 5 - 7 pm www.rhubarbradio.com !

I've been away for a while...

But have had a much-needed kick up the bum area to get this in gear..

Two weeks ago we did a show to coincide with (the now finished flatpack festival http://www.flatpackfestival.org.uk/) where we played music made for films (or used in films) ONLY (except.. thats kind of a lie.. we also played songs from tv shows as well). Two of my lovely chums Leah and Mark came down to guess the films (although they were pretty shit at doing that), and my mate from up norf Stu was also around to help keep things clean (although he was pretty shit at doing that .. at one point Leah was on HER PHONE to rhubarb radio's very own Waylind from WHOMANITY (http://www.myspace.com/whomanity) going "what film is this from .."doo doo dooo doo doo ") She got Magic Dance from Labyrinth in approximately o.2735 seconds though, which was rather impressive.

listen back to the whole show here : http://www.rhubarbradio.com/programmes/lostinthewood/2010/03/27/ (gigantic apologies about the fuzzing crappo noise during the first half of the show . BIG PROPS to dolhasz for coming down to pull out a single wire and fix it in an instant.)
